Baby gorilla heads out to play

Mar 26 - A baby gorilla born via rare Caesarian section ventures outside with its mother at the San Diego Zoo for the first time. Sharon Reich reports.

Looking at her today, you'd never know that this baby gorilla had a tough beginning. The little baby is an endangered western lowland gorilla. She came down with pneumonia after her mom Imani delivered her via C-section. Zookeepers say it's their first outing in the gorilla exhibit since being released from the San Diego Zoo's hospital. SOUNDBITE: Jamie Pawlowski, zookeeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, saying (English): "She kept the baby close to her chest, just like she should, and the group came out, the kids were definitely the most interested, the rest of the group members were definitely ready to be out foraging on exhibit." Imani, went into labor at the zoo but was unable to complete the delivery. She was also treated for pneumonia and additionally suffered a collapsed lung, which doctors were able to reinflate last week. The unnamed baby girl is the 17th gorilla born at the zoo. Five-year-old Frank and a 2-year-old named Monroe are already waiting for her to monkey around.
