Tokyo enjoys first signs of spring under blooming cherry blossom trees

March 31 - Residents in Japan’s capital relish warm weather by picnicking under blooming cherry blossoms. Tara Cleary reports.

While the U.S. is still feeling the effects of a long and harsh winter, Tokyo residents are picnicking in warm weather under canopies of cherry blossoms. SOUNDBITE: HIROSHI SUZUKI, SAYING (Japanese): "For the Japanese, with or even without the cherry blossoms, getting together and drinking is a fun thing to do." SOUNDBITE: MIKI LINDSEY, SAYING (Japanese): "With the build-up of stress from work, this is a once a year chance to see the cherry blossoms and relax, my feelings are refreshed by this annual tradition." One of Japan's best-known symbols, the light pink flowers signify spring and the beginning of a new year for schools and businesses. The cherry blossom season usually lasts seven to 10 days in Tokyo.
