Residents living in coastal areas of Chile leave their homes in the middle of the night with few possession, just happy to be alive. They were told to move after a massive earthquake of 8.2 magnitude in the north, triggered a tsunami. Several people have been crushed to death or killed by heart attacks. Waves of up to 2.1m hit some areas causing power cuts and landslides. In Arica, many sought shelter outside, as houses collapsed around them. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED RESIDENT OF ARICA, SAYING: "Please just help us. Please pray for Arica." Ambulances raced to attend to the injured. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN, SAYING: "It was very strong, it was very long, everything moved. All we could do was pray with our daughter." The quake was very shallow, striking around 80 kilometres north west of the mining area off Iquique. Petrol stations were inundated as drivers queued to fill their tanks. Chilean TV broadcast these pictures of traffic jams as people tried to leave town. Seismologists have warned residents to be prepared for more aftershocks and the possibility of an even bigger quake.
