Fort Hood shootings frustrate U.S. military efforts to secure bases

April 3 - Fort Hood gunman kills three, wounds at least 16, and throws a spotlight on the military's so-far frustrated efforts to secure its bases from potential shooters. Mana Rabiee reports.

Fort Hood in Texas was open again on Thursday. The lockdown over, after a soldier opened fire on Wednesday, killing three people and injuring at least 16 others before taking his own life. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. ARMY LT. GEN. MARK MILLEY SAYING: "It is believed that he walked into one of the unit buildings, opened fire, got into a vehicle, fired from a vehicle, got out of the vehicle, got out of the vehicle, walked into another building and opened fire again and was engaged by local law enforcement." At the suspect's home, his wife is said to be cooperating with investigators, an FBI official told CNN. Security officials say early information ID's the gunman as Ivan Lopez, but they won't confirm his identity for now. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. ARMY LT. GEN. MARK MILLEY SAYING: "We do know that this soldier had behavioral health and mental health issues and was being treated for that." The rampage echoed the violence at Fort Hood in 2009. That's when former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan shot 13 people dead on the base and wounded 32 others. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel asked for a moment of silence for the victims and families of Wednesday's shooting. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHUCK HAGEL, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE, SAYING: "Obviously when we have these kind of tragedies on our bases, something's not working." The latest rampage is the third shooting at a military base in just six months. It throws a spotlight on the military's frustrated efforts to secure its bases from potential shooters.
