ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) University students clashed with riot policemen on Thursday (April 3) after two months of political unrest that has killed 39 people. Policemen used tear gas to disperse students from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV). Protesters have been on the streets since early February calling for President Nicolas Maduro's resignation and complaining about a litany of problems from rampant crime to food shortages. Students had gathered at university premises and wanted to march to Economy Ministry offices but were repressed by the police, who also used rubber bullets and water sprayed from tanks. Students threw back gas bombs and fire crackers at police. Two students and a cameraman were reported injured during the melee, local media reported. The 39 fatalities have included government supporters, protesters and members of security forces. The protesters are demanding that President Nicolas Maduro resign, while the socialist president says his foes want to create chaos and trigger a coup, like the one 12 years ago that briefly ousted his predecessor and mentor, the late Hugo Chavez. Maduro says opposition media, international media, rights groups and the United States are trying to concoct an impression of state repression to put pressure on him.
