Alabama residents rescued from flood

April 7 - Rescue crews help to evacuate apartment residents after heavy rain floods city streets in Birmingham, Alabama. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Residents at this Alabama apartment building awoke to find water quickly rising outside their doors. Birmingham is being pummeled by heavy rain. (SOUNDBITE) (English) APARTMENT RESIDENT, ANGELA KIRBY, SAYING: "When I woke up it was moving like a river, so by the time we put on our clothes and opened the door, 5 minutes it was flooded." Neighbors quickly alerted each other to get out. (SOUNDBITE) (English) APARTMENT RESIDENT, STEPHANIE CARMEN, SAYING: "It was a lot of banging on the door, people were coming around making sure people were getting out." Then rescue crews arrived, telling people to evacuate or go to a higher floor. Upstairs neighbors were glad to open their doors. (SOUNDBITE) (English) APARTMENT RESIDENT, MONIQUE HAHN, SAYING: "Everybody's been super nice offering warm clothes, these aren't even my clothes I have on her clothes, but they've just been wonderful." Many people were pulled to safety by rafts, past rows of cars almost completely submerged in water.
