ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) His voice cracking with emotion, Oscar Pistorius took the witness stand in his own defense on Monday (April 7) and apologized to the family of killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The disabled South African track star, on trial for murder, said he fired four times through a toilet door at his luxury Pretoria home in the belief he was defending her from an intruder. "I would like to apologise and say that there is not a moment, there hasn't been a moment, since this tragedy happened, and I haven't thought about the family," Pistorius told the court. "I wake every morning and you're the first people I think of, you're the first people I pray for. I can't imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness that I have caused you and your family. I was simply trying to protect Reeva. I can promise you that when she went to bed that night, she felt loved. I have tried to put words on paper many many times to write to you, but no words would have sufficed." Steenkamp, a law graduate and model, was hit by at least three rounds fired by Pistorius, one of which - to the head - killed her almost instantly, the court has heard. Reeva's mother June Steenkamp, sitting in the public gallery of the packed Pretoria courtroom, bowed her head and remained steely faced.
