ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) At least ten people died when a tractor-trailer slammed into a tour bus in northern California Thursday. Authorities say many were high school students -- heading to a campus tour. , More than 30 others were injured after the driver of a FedEx truck lost control, crossed a divider on Interstate 5, side-swiped a car and then smashed head-on into the tour bus around 5:30 p.m. At a news conference Friday, members of the California Highway Patrol asked for the public's patience as they investigate the circumstances of the crash. "Our main team is assisting and conducting this investigation with the assistance of the National Transportation Safety Board," said Lt. Scott Fredrick. "The investigators will use sophisticated surveying and mapping equipment and 3D diagramming in order to fully reconstruct the sequence of events that caused the collision," he added. Apart from the driver, the bus was carrying between 44 and 48 students and several chaperones to Humboldt State University for a campus tour. "We're doubly saddened by the fact that many of [the victims] are first generation and students from low-income who have done all the right academic things and had their dream of going to Humboldt State taken away by this tragic accident," said California State University Chancellor Timothy White. Pictures from the accident show the bus reduced to a burned-out chassis resting sideways across the highway. Yellow tarps are draped over what appear to be bodies in the wreckage.
