Police dogs get new bullet-proof vests

April 12 - Sacramento police K-9 unit is now equipped with stronger bullet-proof vests after a non-profit donation. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Police dogs in Sacramento try on their new and improved bullet-proof vests. They even have built-in infrared cameras. Officer Randy Van Dusen is relieved to have extra protection for his dog Bosko. He witnessed his other dog take a bullet. SOUNDBITE (English) OFFICER RANDY VAN DUSEN SAYING: "Seeing your partner shot like that is definitely a tough thing to deal with. And so, having these vests now, and knowing the protection level for the the dog is much better." The dogs won't wear them every day. They're heavy, and the dogs would get too hot, says Sergeant Joshua Dobson. SOUNDBITE (English) SERGEANT JOSHUA DOBSON SAYING: "It's for a special circumstance where we maybe have some information regarding a suspect having a weapon or some other high-risk incident." The vests - worth one thousand dollars each - have been donated by a non-profit called "Cover Your K-9".
