Tourists marvel at D.C.cherry blossoms

April 12 - Thousands of tourists from all over the world descend on the National Mall to view cherry trees in bloom. Vanessa Johnston reports.

SOUNDBITE (English) TOURIST SUZANNE IVERSON SAYING: "I'm from New Orleans, and I came here to see the most beautiful sight on the planet." The cherry trees are in peak bloom in Washington, D.C. Tourists are out in droves, as the bloom typically lasts for only seven to ten days. SOUNDBITE (English) TOURIST ED HILLSMAN SAYING: "I love that all of these people are out here enjoying this, and it's just an absolutely beautiful sight." The cherry trees were a gift from Japan 102 years ago. Every year the National Park Service tries to predict when they will bloom. SOUNDBITE (English) TOURIST MARY O'HAVER SAYING: "It just lasts a short period of time of really prettiness and happiness, and then we go back to the regular political stuff that goes on here all the time." The National Cherry Blossom Festival ends Sunday.
