Ukrainians pray for peace

April 13 - Orthodox Christians in Kiev head to the cathedral to celebrate Palm Sunday and pray for a peaceful resolution to their country's conflict. Nathan Frandino reports.

Orthodox Christians in Kiev are marking the start of Easter with prayers for Ukraine. With yew branches and their faith, worshippers line up to be blessed on Palm Sunday. On their minds, an end to their country's conflict. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) ALLA IVANOVA, FROM CRIMEA, IN KIEV TO VISIT HER DAUGHTER, SAYING: "I prayed for peace and that everything will be ok. This is the most important. If there is peace, there is happiness and there is life." After months of protests, Ukraine now faces a separatist movement in the east. Like in Crimea, pro-Russian residents are demanding referendums on whether to join Russia. At the cathedral, more prayers for peace. (SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) PETRO, KIEV CITIZEN, SAYING: "I prayed for Ukraine, for God to save my Ukraine from invaders. And for all our children, so they won't know war." Ukraine's interior minister says there are already dead and wounded in an operation to remove pro-Russian men from a seized police headquarters in Slaviansk. Moscow has vowed to protect Russian-speakers in Ukraine at any cost.
