It's been described as 'blue perfection' by jewelry experts.
And it's just as expensive as it is beautiful. Pegged at $21 to $25 million (USD) it leads the upcoming Christie's Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva.
Rahul Kadakia, the Head of Jewelry for Christie's Americas & Switzerland, says what makes this stone special, is that blue diamonds are very rare, accounting for less than two percent of world diamond production.
SOUNDBITE: RAHUL KADAKIA, HEAD OF JEWELRY FOR CHRISTIE'S AMERICAS & SWITZERLAND, SAYING (English) :
"To have a stone that weighs 13 carats is near impossible. 13-carat vivid blue being the strongest saturation in a blue diamond, deeply saturated rich blue color, a pear shaped stone, and flawless. So the stone is internally and externally bereft of any imperfections. And I'll show the stone to you -- it's a very large sized stone. And the color as you can see is very rich. So this is the largest flawless vivid blue diamond in the world. So in simple terms, it's the best blue diamond in the world."
As to its origins, Kadakia isn't certain but says it's most likely from South Africa, where most blue diamonds are usually discovered.
Christie's hopes that the overall sales from the Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva on May 14th will yield upwards of 100 million dollars.
