Boston preserves, displays items lost in the bombings

April 15 - Running shoes, shirts and messages gathered in the aftermath of last year's Boston Marathon bombing are on display on the first anniversary of the attack. Deborah Gembara reports.

Not far from the Boston marathon finish line, a memorial made up of items left here in the aftermath of that bitter day in April. There's also a tribute to those killed. George Katchen is a native of Massachusetts. SOUNDBITE: GEORGE KATCHEN IS A NATIVE OF MASSACHUSETTS. "Tragedies really do bring people together. It helps one to focus, where do you really want to go with your life. I get in tears right now just talking about it, thinking about it." Many of the items left after the attacks were gathered up by the city and sorted at a storage facility. The exhibit also includes messages and items like sneakers sent in from around the world. SOUNDBITE: SAMANTHA JONES SAYING: "There's one pair that says, 'these shoes taught me the joy of running and you can never take that away,' written on the sole. And for me that was exactly encapsulating the event, that that was an event designed for ordinary people to be heroes and get to run a marathon and you can't take that away from the city." Visitors can also add their own messages. While the exhibit formed in the wake of tragedy, many here hope the enduring message will be one of strength.
