Boston backpack hoax suspect charged, sent for psychiatric evaluation

April 16 - Man who was arrested near the Boston Marathon finish line with a suspicious backpack is charged and sent for psychiatric evaluation, as the city beefs up security ahead of next week's event. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Kevin Edson appears in a Boston court on Wednesday. He was arrested the day before acting suspiciously near the Boston Marathon finish line, walking barefoot with a black veil. He told police his backpack contained a rice cooker. A bomb squad detonated the bag and one other. The incident occurred after the city marked the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and injured 264. Edson, who also goes by the name "Kayvon", was charged with threatening battery, disorderly conduct, and possession of a hoax device. At a news conference Wednesday, officials urged the public to report anything strange. SOUNBITE (English) MASSACHUSETTS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY DIRECTOR, KURT SCHWARTZ, SAYING: "We are asking spectators to follow simple, common sense guidelines. This year, please, no backpacks. No over-the-shoulder bags. No large items, no bulky items, no masks, no costumes that protrude out out from your body," Edson was sent for psychiatric evaluation and his bail was set at $100,000. The Boston Marathon is scheduled for April 21st.
