The 2014 Cannes line-up is announced

Apr 17 - Meryl Streep, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Juliette Binoche, Nicole Kidman and Hilary Swank are among the attendees at this year's Cannes film festival. Rollo Ross reports.

The line-up for this year's Cannes film festival was announced on Thursday April 17th in Paris by its director Thierry Fremaux ahead of the opening night on May 14th. SOUNDBITE: Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux, saying (English): "You can find in the official selection a lot of what we can call 'big names' but also meeting with young new directors. And it's also one of the missions of a festival like Cannes, it's to introduce and to put new names in the map." The festival will officially open with 'Grace of Monaco' about Princess Grace's life in the principality not far from Cannes, and Nicole Kidman will be the first star to walk up the famous steps. Among other attendees are Oscar winning actresses Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank who will be acting in "The Homesman", directed and starring Tommy Lee Jones. Another actor turned film maker is Ryan Gosling who will be taking his directorial debut "Lost River" to Cannes. New work will also be seen from 'The Artist' director Michel Hazanavicius and also by David Cronenberg, who is reuniting with Robert Pattinson in 'Maps to the Stars'. Pattinson is also expected in Cannes for Australian movie 'The Rover'. Two-time Palme D'Or winners the Dardennes brothers are back with their new film 'Two Days, One Night' which stars French actress Marion Cotillard. French director Olivier Assayas has Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart on board for 'Clouds of Sils Maria'. And British director Ken Loach will be going up against fellow Brit Mike Leigh in the competition with his film 'Jimmy's Hall'. Overall, there are 18 films in the main competition hoping for the Palme D'Or, and in case all of this seems quite serious - there's also going to be a launch of 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' to ensure there's something for everyone.
