Charsadda is a district located in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is close to Pakistan's troubled tribal region where troops have, for years, been fighting Islamic militants. The city has seen attacks by militants in the past few years, with targets ranging from civilians to law enforcement personnel. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistan is home to dozens of militant groups including the Taliban who are fighting to overthrow Pakistan's democratically elected government and impose a strict form of Islamic law.
