ROUGH CUT (NO NARRATION) Swedish electro-pop artist Tove Lo's new EP hopes to appeal to international audiences with her songs about heartache and break ups. Tove Lo (real name Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson) described her music as "pop, but you know, a bit rough round the edges, like very honest lyrics", "in your face" and "raw" while promoting her debut EP "Truth Serum" in London, which was released earlier this month (April 2014). The pop star rose to fame after self-releasing her first gritty single "Habits" in April 2013, where she sings about having to "stay high all the time to keep you off my mind." She began a career in music as a songwriter, working alongside producer and songwriter Max Martin and penning lyrics for the likes of Girls Aloud and Icona Pop before making the transition to singing, which she said she finds cathartic. The singer said that her raw lyrics are a reflection of her personal experiences. Despite her admittedly "safe" upbringing in Stockholm, Tove says that she "kind of pretty early started looking for trouble a bit more because I wanted to, I wanted something different than like where I was from". She said that "Truth Serum" is inspired by a past relationship. But Tove insisted that the music isn't only meant to be therapeutic for her, and added that she has been approached by fans who say her songs help them "dance the tears away". Although her music may sound downbeat, the Swedish singer has reason to celebrate. After a successful series of international shows, Tove Lo has earned a place in the charts. Hippie Sabotage's remix of 'Habits' - retitled 'Stay High' - is currently number six in the official singles chart UK Top 100 and was until recently number 5 in the iTunes UK chart. The Swedish singer is set to play in the US, Canada and the UK later this month. Truth Serum EP is out now on Polydor.
