A teenage boy is lucky to be alive after a risky trip to Hawaii. He ran away from home and survived the five-hour flight in the wheel well of a jetliner. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MAUI AIRPORT MANAGER, MARVIN MONIZ, SAYING: "He indicated there was some problems at home with his family and he left the home and headed out to the airport, obviously jumped the fence there in San Jose." Once on the tarmac, the 16-year-old boy made his way to Hawaiian Airlines flight 45, crawling into the wheel well. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MAUI AIRPORT MANAGER, MARVIN MONIZ, SAYING: "There is some space, but he's very fortunate that when the wheel went up into position that it didn't crush him." Authorities say he quickly lost consciousness as temperatures sank as low as minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SAN FRANCISCO GENERAL HOSPITAL ER, MELANIE SINGH, SAYING: "Possibly what happened was he went into a coma.. comatose state. passed out from low oxygen level." "It's a miracle to survive a flight five hours at 35,000 feet with no oxygen. It's not a temperature controlled area as well." About an hour after the plane landed on Sunday morning, the boy regained consciousness and was spotted by ground crew. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MAUI AIRPORT MANAGER, MARVIN MONIZ, SAYING: "He was weak. He hung from the wheel well and then he fell to the ground and regained some strength and stood up and started walking to the front of the aircraft." The boy was unharmed, but was turned over to local child protection officials. The story leaves other passengers with serious concerns: (SOUNDBITE) (English) PASSENGER RICKY CABRERA, SAYING: "If a kid was able to jump a fence and hop onto the landing gear, imagine someone could have easily placed a bomb. There was a serious security breach here that needs to be addressed."
