Three Americans were killed on Thursday, and another injured, when a security guard opened fire at a hospital funded by a U.S. Christian charity. It's the latest in a spate of attacks on foreign civilians in Afghanistan. (SOUNDBITE) (Dari) MOHAMMAD ZARIF, SHOPKEEPER NEARBY HOSPITAL SAYING: "I heard gunfire and then I was told that three foreigners were shot dead." Afghanistan's Health Minister Suriya Dalil: (SOUNDBITE) (Dari) AFGHAN HEATH MINISTER SURIYA DALIL SAYING: "In today's incident one of our children specialists who has worked for more than seven years in this hospital was killed and two other American citizens who came to meet this specialty doctor, a father and son, were killed." The shooter, who was captured, was a policeman employed as a security guard at the Cure Hospital, which specialises in children's and maternal health. The health minister says the father and son were killed as they were leaving the hospital. (SOUNDBITE) (Dari) AFGHAN HEALTH MINISTER SURIYA DALIL SAYING: "They were not the people carrying guns, they did not have military uniforms, they came here under immense pressure and were here only to serve the people of Afghanistan. This was an inhumane and brutal action, and unfortunately will impact our heath services." The Taliban have claimed responsibility for similar attacks this year, but they made no immediate comment about Thursday's shooting. Attacks on security forces, Afghan civilians and Westerners have been on the rise the start of the new year. The violence comes as Western forces prepare to leave the country and as Afghans choose a new president.
