The burial service for U.S. Navy Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark A. Mayo was held at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday (April 25).
Petty Officer Mayo was fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire on board a ship at the U.S. Navy base in Norfolk, Virginia, on March 24.
He was killed while protecting another sailor in the incident and was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal in a private ceremony with Mayo's family before his burial.
It is the highest non-combat decoration awarded for heroism by the U.S. Navy.
