April 26 - A workshop in California teaches people how to fight off carjackers after a huge spike in crime. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Carjackings have become a big problem in Oakland, California. So this workshop is teaching people how to defend themselves just in case. Danny Zelig is the owner of the Krav Maga Institute. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DANNY ZELIG, OWNER OF KRAV MAGA INSTITUTE, SAYING: "We always try to keep updated about what are the current threats." Hundreds of people were carjacked in Oakland last year -- a 23 percent increase from the year before. Instructors like Deanna Perez show people how to ward off attackers through role-playing. (SOUNDBITE) (English) INSTRUCTOR DEANNA PEREZ SAYING: "Taking classes will definitely help with prevention if you should get carjacked." Police advise people to walk away and not engage with a criminal. These instructors agree, but say sometimes it's necessary to fight back.
