Obama promotes stability and trade deal for Malaysian students

April 27 - President Barack Obama holds a town hall style meeting in Malaysia to promote peace, security and a 12-nation trade deal. Nathan Frandino reports.

President Barack Obama received a warm welcome Sunday at the University of Malay where he reiterated U.S. commitment to peace and stability in the region. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "I believe that together we can make the Asia Pacific more secure, and America has the strongest military in the world, but we don't seek conflict, we seek to keep the peace." Obama was a holding a town hall style meeting during which he also sought to bolster support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP is a 12-nation deal that would eliminate trade barriers and harmonize regulations. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "Part of what we are trying to do is to create higher standards for labor protection, for environmental protection, more consistent protection of intellectual properties, because increasingly that's the next phase of wealth. All those things require more transparency and more accountability and more rule of law." Not everyone was pleased. A group of students held a silent demonstration, holding placards in opposition. Malaysia has said it remains far from ready to sign the U.S-led trade pact due to domestic "sensitivities." Obama will depart Malaysia for the Philippines on Monday.
