ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) A Tornado touched down in Baxter Springs, Kansas, Sunday night (April 27), destroying homes and businesses and injuring at least 34 people. "We calculated 100 residences that were damaged in some way, some minor, some significant, some totally destroyed. We had another 12 businesses that were, again, damaged," said Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves during a news conference on Monday (April 28). One person had reportedly died, but Groves confirmed that the incident was medical-related and not necessarily caused by the tornado. "We had nine that were injured signifcantly enough that they needed to be transported to hospitals. We had 25 that were non-serious injuries," he said. The population of Baxter Springs is about 4,200 people. Tornadoes also ripped through neighboring Arkansas and Oklahoma, where at least 17 people died.
