Meet not one, not two, but three new additions to Lima's Huachipa zoo. The unnamed triplets are rare white tiger cubs, making their first public appearance since their mother Clarita gave birth two months ago. The zoo's head vet says the tigress has taken to her offspring. SOUNDBITE: Clarita Hermoza, Head veterinarian at the Huachipa Zoo, saying (Spanish) : "The birth of these white tigers is very important for us because Peru is one of the three countries in South America who have white tigers in their collection. And this birth was a success because the mother has demonstrated a capacity to raise the cubs, according to the sanitation and nutrition (levels) of the zoo." The three felines have become the zoo's main attraction and the park is holding a competition for children to help come up with names. Poaching and deforestation have made white tigers a rare sight in the wild. Breeding programs like the one in Lima play an important role in helping save them from extinction.
