STORY: Scuffles broke out during May Day demonstrations in the German city of Hamburg Thursday May 1) after some among the several thousand protesters started throwing rocks and bottles, according to police.
Authorities in Hamburg said at least eight people were arrested, two detained and several injured while in Berlin, "several arrests" were made among the 19,000 participants.
According to a Hamburg police spokesman, 2,200 demonstrators marched through the port city's St.Pauli district and the atmosphere was "aggressive" from the start.
Protesters threw rocks and bottles, set off fireworks and used other pyrotechnics, a Hamburg police spokesman said.
