California Chrome shines at the Kentucky Derby

May 4 - California Chrome, the three-year-old colt bred on a shoestring budget, wins the Kentucky Derby, adding a new fairytale chapter to America's most famous horse race. Jillian Kitchener reports.

The bright and sunny day at Churchill Downs was echoed in some interesting fashion choices. Flowers and feathers are practically expected at the star-studded Kentucky Derby. (SOUNDBITE) (English) TV PERSONALITY JEFF CORWIN SAYING: "My wife said, guess what, you can wear whatever you want. You can really pop. And there's nothing too tacky and too colorful." But fashion took center stage to the highly anticipated horse race, as bets flew fast. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED KENTUCKY DERBY ATTENDEE, SAYING: "I'm just putting $10 on every horse." (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED KENTUCKY DERBY ATTENDEE, SAYING: "It's all about odds, you have to calculate every statistic." (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED KENTUCKY DERBY ATTENDEE, SAYING: "I'm originally from California so I'm betting on california chrome." The best bet was on the three-year-old colt named California Chrome. Perfectly ridden by Victor Espinoza, the horse sprinted clear of his rivals, winning the $2.2 million classic by one and a quarter lengths. He was originally bred for just $10,000 by two blue-collar working men who took a gamble on a mare no one else wanted. A packed crowd celebrated his remarkable win. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED KENTUCKY DERBY ATTENDEE, SAYING: "There's only one place to be, one track to be at. Not Preakness, not Belmont. It's the Kentucky Derby, best race of the year." And certainly the best day of the year for jockey Victor Espinoza, who is now credited with his second Derby win.
