Once a year, the humble donkey is the life of the party at the small Mexican town of Otumba. The Donkey Festival is a tradition dating back some 60 years, when locals who relied heavily on donkeys decided the animals deserve their own day of fun. Today, the donkeys have their own carnival parade, a polo match and even a beauty contest -festivities enough to attract visitors from nearby towns. SOUNDBITE: Local, Olivia Flores, Saying (Spanish) "I think it's great that it is recognized nationally and around the world. We live close by and come every year. I think it's well known around the country and everyone knows this place as donkey land." Most of this honor is due to the contribution the animals make in the production of a local alcoholic drink called "pulque," that the donkeys carry around in bags for distribution and consumption.
