GLAAD awards a proud occasion for George Takei and Kylie Minogue

May 6 - Pop star Kylie Minogue serenades the audience and George Takei wins the top honour at GLAAD's annual media awards in New York. Edward Baran reports.

Pop star Kylie Minogue serenaded fans at the 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on Saturday May 3rd.
Minogue has previously said her gay audience helped propel her initial success.
SOUNDBITE, Kylie Minogue, singer, saying (English):
"It's an honor to be here with you all celebrating 25 years of diversity and inclusion in the media. I'm so proud of everything that GLAAD has done to encourage acceptance and make change."
Star Trek actor George Takei was given the night's top honour, the Vito Russo award for his work in promoting gay equality.
SOUNDBITE. George Takei, actor, saying (English):
"As a closeted kid growing up in Los Angeles, all I saw of gays and lesbians in movies and television or heard on radio were caricatures....The media then was a soul-crushing monster. GLAAD took on this formidable beast with its media savvy, political acumen and the power of its advocacy."
GLAAD which stands for Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is dedicated to eliminating homophobia and assuring fair portrayal of gay people in the media.
