Eight thoroughbreds are dead following a fire that destroyed a barn in Lexington, Kentucky. It belonged to the executive director of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, John T. Ward. Ward was also the trainer of the 2001 winner of the Kentucky Derby, Monarchos. Another trainer who lives on the property told local news outlets he heard "kicking and screaming" inside the barn, and says he was only able to save two of the ten horses inside. One firefighter was injured while putting out the blaze. Fire investigators are on scene looking into what may have caused the fire, which has been brought to the attention of an arson investigator.
