ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) On Friday (May 12) the NBA installed Richard Parsons, a former Time Warner chief executive and chairman, as interim chief executive of the Clippers. Parsons was appointed three days after Sterling's long-time top lieutenant, Andy Roeser, was placed on indefinite leave as team president. "They need someone to step in, and take hold of this thing, and be -- on an intern basis -- the leader. And make sure that no value is lost, make sure that the enterprise continues to function in an appropriate way. Perhaps even help it move to the next level," Parsons said during a press conference in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who was banned for life from the NBA over racist comments, has apologized and asked for forgiveness in his first public statement since the controversy began last month, CNN said on Sunday. In an interview to be broadcast on Monday, Sterling told CNN he made a terrible mistake but was not a racist. His comments came about two weeks after National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver fined the billionaire businessman $2.5 million and banned him for life after a tape surfaced of Sterling telling a female friend not to associate with black people. Parsons hopes he can make a difference to the way people look at the team. "The team has risen to the challenge, and I'm hoping -- I'm hoping -- that to some small extent, maybe I can too. And help people look beyond just race and look to the content of people's character and their ability to perform," said Parsons.
