Second case of MERS confirmed in U.S.

May 12 - U.S. health officials confirm the country's second case of MERS, a deadly virus first discovered in the Middle East. Jillian Kitchener reports.

The second case of the deadly MERS virus has reached the U.S. After being admitted to a hospital in Orlando, health officials say the patient is in good condition. The 44 year-old is a healthcare worker who lives and works in Saudi Arabia. He traveled to the U.S. to visit relatives. Experts say this latest case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome is not related to the first. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DR. ANNE SCHUCHAT, DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR IMMUNIZATION AND RESPIRATORY DISEASES, SAYING: "We're intensively evaluating the airplane travelers for these two patients who have traveled into the United States to really understand if there is any risk or not." She said the CDC is part of an international response to the virus. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DR. ANNE SCHUCHAT, DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR IMMUNIZATION AND RESPIRATORY DISEASES, SAYING: "It's so important that every country work together in a global community for this kind of new infectious threat. Diseases are an airplane ride away from us and the more we work together the quicker we can contain and control their spread." Although the MERS virus has been shown to transmit from person to person, it is not easily transmissible to the general public.
