Fire crews gain ground on San Diego wildfire

May 14 - California fire crews are making progress in battling a wildfire that has burned some 800 acres around San Diego. Nathan Frandino reports.

Residents outside San Diego, like Nicole Richter, are finally home. She and her family were among thousands evacuated due to a massive fire. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LOCAL RESIDENT NICOLE RICHTER SAYING: "As long as I had them, I knew everything else I could buy or you could try to replace, but you can't replace these little guys." Fortunately, she did not have to replace anything. Fire crews in California now have the upper hand in fighting a massive blaze. The fire started Tuesday and burned some 800 acres. The so-called Bernardo fire comes as California enters its peak fire season in the midst of one of its worst droughts in decades. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SAN DIEGO FIRE CHIEF JAVIER MAINAR SAYING: "It is not unlike a hurricane or tornado disaster. They are incredibly difficult and dynamic emergencies to maintain." Hundreds of firefighters fought to keep the flames from advancing into San Diego neighborhoods. Officials said no injuries were reported and no homes were damaged. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LOCAL RESIDENT NICOLE RICHTER SAYING: "It was really, really scary, but I mean, the firefighters, I still cannot believe nobody lost a home. Nobody was injured." Officials said the largest part of the emergency has passed.
