ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Wildfires raged across southern California on Thursday (May 15), keeping thousands of San Diego county residents away from their homes. California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency. "These big black plumes of smoke just seemed to come out of nowhere. It was nowhere near us and then it was there," said an unidentified California resident. Nine wildfires, which broke out on Wednesday (May 14), have so far scorched more than 9,000 acres. Emergency shelters have been set up at schools and community centers. "You leave your house - I get the chills thinking about it - thinking, I hope I see it when I come back," said another unidentified California resident. A blaze in San Marcos prompted officials to issue evacuation notices for thousands of residents and students at a California State University campus. The university, which has more than 9,000 students, said on Thursday its evacuation orders would remain through Friday and it had canceled commencement ceremonies. No major injuries have been reported.
