After six days, firefighters are nearly in control of 11 wildfires in southern California. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SAN DIEGO BATTALION CHIEF NICK SCHULER SAYING: "There's no doubt crews are fatigued. They've been working 24, 48 hours prior to any relief showing up." Signs of gratitude have risen across San Diego county. And at some homes spared by the fire, more evidence of hard work. This man found a message left by one person fighting for the home. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOMEOWNER TODD SMITH SAYING: "It says I helped put your backyard out. Not a fireman. Seventeen-year-old boy. Chris Simmons. Vista High School." The 17-year-old Boy Scout came to the neighborhood to take photos, but couldn't just stand by. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRIS SIMMONS SAYING: "I just started going house to house, putting out fires. My mentality was just to save as much as I can." (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOMEOWNER TODD SMITH SAYING: "What he did really did a huge difference. My fence is burned to the edge of my house. I could have lost my home." Not everyone was so lucky. This man watched on television as local news showed what was left of his home. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOMEOWNER CHRIS MEREDITH SAYING: "When they panned over there, there were two fire engines. There was this whole intake of breath and it panned to our home and it was no longer there." While most of his home was left unrecognizable, there was still something left: 40 coyfish still swimming in a pond the man built 25 years ago. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOMEOWNER CHRIS MEREDITH SAYING: "I think it'll become a symbol of this community that life is still going on." No serious injuries were reported, but dozens of homes and at least 26,000 acres were destroyed.
