A winning night for the GOP establishment. Republican establishment candidates swept away their Tea Party rivals on Tuesday in key U.S. Senate primaries. In Kentucky, Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell easily beat his Tea Party primary challenger. His decisive victory headlined the busiest election night of the year so far. Voters in six states picked candidates for November elections that will decide which party controls Congress. SOUNDBITE: REPUBLICAN SENATE LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL SAYING: "For 5.5 years powers in Washington have treated the people of this state with contempt, and tonight I have a simple message: those days are numbered." In Georgia and Oregon, too, establishment-backed GOP candidates beat out more conservative Tea Party candidates. Tuesday's primary wins extends a winning streak for the Republican establishment against the Tea Party. It also bolsters Republican chances of retaking the Senate in November.
