Smoke and flames continue to pour out from the trees, after a wind-whipped fire burned through a popular Arizona canyon on Wednesday. Around 500 firefighters battled the so-called Slide Fire near Oak Creek Canyon, north of Phoenix. It spread 4,500 acres. And more than 3,000 residents were put on alert for possible evacuation. Doug Kelley's family made a move to get out. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DOUG KELLEY, SAYING: "My wife's kind of a basket case right now but I guess that's to be expected." Of course, safety was everyone's top priority. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FLAGSTAFF FIRE DEPT CAPTAIN, BILL MORSE, SAYING: "When we're talking such steep, tough difficult terrain and hard challenging situations we want the fire fighters and the public to be safest first and foremost." Officials said an undetermined number of residents along a 2-mile stretch near the canyon had already been evacuated. They said the blaze was burning about 3 to 4 miles from the nearest residence.
