It started with the early morning seizure of the airport in Donetsk by pro-Russian separatists.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DONETSK AIRPORT SPOKESMAN DMITRY KOSINOV, SAYING:
"At about three o'clock in the morning armed men arrived here. There was no direct confrontation. There was no armed conflict. They demanded everyone, including the Ukrainian military, withdraw from the airport."
Kiev's response was swift and unequivocal.
Warplanes were dispatched and helicopter gunships fired on the terminal sending dark columns of smoke into the sky. The choppers also sent out decoy flares as fighters shot at them from the ground.
Ukraine's rapid military response was a direct message for Russia, and the first of what will likely be many challenges for newly elected leader Petro Poroshenko government.
