May 26 - The nation marked the Memorial Day holiday weekend with wreath-laying ceremonies, wounded warrior baseball games, a concert on the National Mall and beach strolls to mark the unofficial start of summer. Mana Rabiee reports.

President Barack Obama helped celebrate Memorial Day on Monday at the Tomb of the Unknowns. He came to honor the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to the nation. But the day also marked the 150th anniversary of Arlington National Cemetery itself. SOUNDBITE: U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "Here, side by side, lie the privates and the generals who defeated fascism and laid the foundation for an American century." Memorial Day celebrations this weekend also included the annual PBS National Memorial Day Concert. SOUNDBITE: FORMER U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE COLIN POWELL SAYING: "To the more than 2.5 million troops of today's generation who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as to their family's, we say thank you. And to those who are still in the field, we stand behind you." In Bethlehem, PA, wounded warriors showed everyone that the nation's pastime is played just as well on prosthetic legs. SOUNDBITE: DAVE VAN SLEET, WOUNDED WARRIOR AMPUTEE SOFTBALL TEAM FOUNDER, SAYING: "Basically we're trying to educate the public about people with prosthetics and what they can do and (off cam) guys that have returned from the military and the war, that they can get back into society and be an outstanding citizen just like everybody else." On the Boston Common, in Massachusetts, a field of American flags; 37,000 of them, to honor every fallen service member from the state since the Revolutionary war. Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of summer. These beach goers marked the day in Ocean City on the Jersey shore. But even the beach and the sun didn't make them forget what the day was all about. SOUNDBITE: BEACH VISITOR PAM HANEY SAYING: "I have 2 kids active duty navy. One is in Pearl Harbor, my son is in San Diego, he just retuned from a 9-month deployment in the Middle East, so for me Memorial Day is a very serious holiday." Memorial day celebrations have been taking place since 1866. It was originally to mark the fallen soldiers of the Civil War. But after World War I, the day was expanded to honor service members who have died in all American wars.
