A massive fire broke out on Tuesday (May 27) at the Donetsk "Druzhba" (Friendship) sports arena, amid an ongoing military offensive in the eastern Ukrainian city.
About 14 fire engines were sent to the venue in order to extinguish a fire at the arena, which is the home venue of the ice hockey club "Donbass," in Donetsk.
An armed group broke into the stadium in the early hours on Tuesday, set it on fire and then left taking with them some stadium property, according to local media reports.
Ukrainian forces fought with separatists in the city of Donetsk for a second day on Tuesday after inflicting heavy losses on the rebels and the government vowed to press on with the military offensive.
Pro-Russian rebels said more than 50 of their fighters had been killed. The mayor of Donetsk, an industrial hub in eastern Ukraine, said the death toll in the clashes that erupted on Monday stood at 40, including two civilians.
