Guinea Ebola outbreak still spreading, Sierra Leone also affected

May 29 - New Ebola cases reported in Guinea despite previous assurances the outbreak had been contained. Natalie Thomas reports.

Guinea's health officials already have a difficult job keeping their population healthy. But they are now facing a new deadly opponent. Ebola. The capital Conakry has recorded its first new ebola case in more than a month. That brings the number of new cases in the country to at least fourteen since May 23rd. (SOUNDBITE) (French) DOCTOR ABOUBAKAR SIDIKI DIAKITE, PRESIDENT OF THE GUINEAN GOVERNMENT'S COMMITTEE TO FIGHT AGAINST EBOLA, SAYING: "If we look at different areas where infection can easily appear, like the morgue in mosques, that's a place where contamination can happen, which completely escapes health controls. Also when you look at bus stations, given people's movements, that's also a place we need to get to better grips with. We must send out a strong signal to all people involved in spreading the disease." Educating people about hygiene and isolating those who already have the disease are the biggest tasks for the authorities, who are already struggling with weak healthcare systems and porous borders. And with signs the virus has now spread to Sierra Leone, experts say the disease is far from under control
