A glimpse into the future as billionaire technology entrepreneur Elon Musk unveils a sleek new spaceship in California His company, Space Exploration Technologies -- or SpaceX -- has designed the seven-seater Dragon V2. Musk says this version will be able to take-off and land just about anywhere. It could also help break Russia's current monopoly on transporting astronauts, since the U.S. ended its space shuttle program three years ago. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ELON MUSK ON COST SAVINGS OF DRAGON V2, SAYING: "It is not really the fact that Russia is taunting the U.S. for a lack of manned access to space. But, they are also massively overcharging and I think that has even gone above 70 million dollars for a seat that the Russians are charging. The quote that we are providing NASA would allow the the seat per astronaut to be less than 20 million dollars and that assumes a low flight rate. So, in a high flight rate it could get to single digit rate." The Dragon is one of three privately owned space taxis vying for NASA development funds and launch contracts. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ELON MUSK ON GOALS, SAYING: "Long term we really want to get to the point of where there are thousands of space flights a year and ultimately where we have a base on the Moon and a base on Mars and become a multi-planet species in a true space civilization, that where things need to go in the long term." More than 32,500 people watched the Dragon unveiling on a live SpaceX webcast.
