As a musician, his music is some of the best known in the world - part of contemporary music folklore. But while millions across the globe would recognise John Lennon's name - far fewer will know his writings and drawings. Sotheby's New York are now auctioning a collection of the late Beatle's handwritten manuscripts and sketches. Head of Books and Titles at the auction house, Richard Austin, says that if Baby, You're a Rich Man, the lot offers a unique insight into the mind of the music legend. SOUNDBITE: Sotheby's New York Head of Books and Titles, Richard Austin, saying (English): "You really see Lennon's humor coming through in a lot of the artwork. He loved to draw these sorts of grotesque, fantastic characters, and you see a lot of those on display on the walls as well. It's something that when you go through, everyone seems to crack a smile when they start looking at the drawings." Of the 89 lots ranging from $500 to $70,000, the most expensive estimated lot is Lennon's handwritten manuscript of "The Singularge Experience of Miss Anne Duffield," valued at between $50,000-$70,000. But Austin says one of the most interesting is a manuscript valued at slightly less, but one that shines a light on one of the most cryptic relationships in modern culture. SOUNDBITE: Sotheby's New York Head of Books and Titles, Richard Austin, saying (English): "For people who are interested in the relationship between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, that's a really interesting lot because this is Paul contributing to John's work outside of music, so that's something that we think a lot of people should be interested in as well." The auction marks the 50th anniversary of "In His Own Write" - a book by John Lennon, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in the U.S.. The block opens in New York on June 4.
