Various schools of thought surrounding the best way to make it out of a bear attack -- alive. Turns out, it varies from state to state, and depends on the type of bear. For Jessica Gamboa of California, playing dead may have been what saved her life when she was attacked by a grizzly in Alaska. (SOUNDBITE) BEAR ATTACK SURVIVOR JESSICA GAMBOA SAYING: "She picked me up, put me on the other side of the road and basically lashed me, bit me... I thought, 'This is pretty much how I'm going to die...'" Covered in blood, she managed to limp to the road, where a passerby drove her to the hospital. But in her hometown state of California, officials say that while playing dead works in Alaska, that's not the case in California. (SOUNDBITE) PATRICK FOY OF THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH & WILDLIFE: "Our recommendation is one were to be attacked by a California bear is to fight back aggressively... Sticks, rocks, anything you can fight the animal off." But some California residents aren't aware that they're supposed to fight back. (SOUNDBITE) UNIDENTIFIED CALIFORNIA RESIDENT SAYING: "If I saw a bear, I'd play dead, that's what scout training has taught us and I'm a scoutmaster... Oops guess I'd better tell the scouts to fight back now!" (SOUNDBITE) UNIDENTIFIED CALIFORNIA RESIDENT SAYING: "I have no idea, I'd probably pass out." While suffering cuts, bruises, and bites to her body, Jessica's expected to make a full recovery. Not always common fate for those mauled by a Grizzly.
