The medical marijuana at this California dispensary in San Jose can cost a pretty penny. But come primary day, they'll be GIVING it away. That's because the city's local cannabis collective is offering its members free or discounted weed -- IF they show a voter ballot or an "I Voted" sticker on Tuesday, during the the state's primary elections. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED MAN SAYING: "It's always good to be politically active, I mean, for any issue, not just this one." The "Weed for Votes" effort is also warning members of proposed city council laws that they say effectively ban pot collectives. They've issued a voter guide promoting cannabis-friendly politicians. SOUNDBITE: PAT KNOOP, HOLISTIC HEALTH CARE, SAYING: "These are the candidates recommended by the Silicon Valley Cannabis Coalition." But some critics say the effort appears illegal under federal law. SOUNDBITE: MAYORAL CANDIDATE ROSE HERRERA SAYING: "To offer somebody an inducement, and to offer them a drug to go and vote, doesn't seem right to me...Do we want to be the capital of Silicon Valley or the capital of marijuana central?" This 18-year-old who didn't want his face shown just picked up some marijuana wax. He says the free weed could just entice him to cast a vote on primary day.
