Palcido Domingo: The voice is there, so I keep singing

Jun 05 - The Spanish tenor says he is lucky to still be performing after so many years. Alicia Powell reports.

Placido Domingo is crediting passion and luck for the longevity of his career. SOUNDBITE: Placido Domingo, singer, saying (English): "Most of the roles that I sing are baritones, but I still do a lot of the singing, some of the singing arias that I was singing as a tenor, I do it also, but I think that every day I feel, the voice feels more comfortable now in the baritone." The 73-year-old is currently pulling double duty as director for the LA Opera and its leading man - the 139th role of his career. SOUNDBITE: Placido Domingo, singer, saying (English): "I really thought that I would be singing for a very short time, so that's the reason I started thinking about being the director of a theater, but the voice is there, so I keep singing." Domingo will open LA Opera's next season in September in the role of the father in "La Traviata." The Spanish tenor will use his voice to cheer on Spain at the World Cup in Brazil before performing in Rio de Janeiro in July.
