Family adopts deceased soldier's dog

June 8 - A service dog is discharged and given a new home, after serving with the late Staff Sergeant Christopher Diaz in Afghanistan. Jillian Kitchener reports.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN, SAYING: "Effective immediately, you are here by discharged from active duty. And ordered to report to the Diaz family to be placed under their love and care." It's a discharge ceremony for a dog. Dino served with Staff Sergeant Christopher Diaz in Afghanistan, sniffing out IED's. Until Diaz died in the line of duty. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRIS' FATHER SALVADOR DIAZ, SAYING: "As an American I am grateful for his sacrifice, but as a dad I am saddened by the loss of my son." Chris' parents applied to adopt the 7-year-old dog through a military program. And they're thrilled with having a new way to remember their son. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRIS' FATHER SALVADOR DIAZ, SAYING: "He's very energetic, Chris was the same way. You can tell there's a lot of love in that dog right there." Dino's new owners were pleasantly surprised by his affection; after his current handler said it should take around 2 weeks for him to adjust. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MAN, SAYING: "We wish you fair winds and following seas as you begin yout new life with the diaz family. May you love and protect them, just as you and staff sgt diaz did for so many young marines.
