Residents of a Siberian village got quite a surprise on Friday.
Returning home after a forced flood evacuation to survey the damage, they discovered a strange object floating in the water --
What appears to be a Russian space rocket.
Investigators and technical experts were called in to try to identify the object.
Alexei Yaskin is a professor of aero-space engineering at Biisk Technology University.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) ALEXEI YASKIN, PROFESSOR OF DEPARTMENT OF ROCKET ENGINES OF BIISK TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY, SAYING:
"This looks like the first stage, judging by its size. Its diameter is approximately 2 (meters) 400 (millimeters) and length about 7 meters. In order to identify which type of destroyed rocket it belonged to, we need to come closer to its shell, but there is no such option at the moment."
It is unclear how the purported space rocket got there.
Some on social media sites speculate that it fell out of the sky, while others allege that it washed into town with flood waters.
