ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Communities across the United States celebrated Flag Day on Saturday (June 14) by raising the national flag and singing the national anthem. From iconic sites like the National Mall in Washington to the quiet pavilion of a Veteran's home in West Lafayette, Indiana, Americans reflected on the principles and values carried in the nation's flag. In Chicago, hundreds celebrated the day by singing the Star Spangled Banner at Macy's on State Street, where a giant U.S. flag some eight stories tall was on display. In the nation's capitol, the Smithsonian marked the 200th anniversary of the national anthem, while nearby on the National Mall many gathered for the Anthem for America concert and sing-along featuring the U.S. Air Force Band and the Fort McHenry Guard Fife and Drum Corps. The first official observance of Flag Day was claimed by Hartford, Connecticut, in the summer of 1861, according to the Department of Veteran's Affairs website. It says by the late 1800's schools across the United States marked Flag Day to aid in the "Americanization of immigrant children" and the observance eventually caught on with local communities across the country.
