Bus program helps children visits dads in prison on Father's Day

June 15 - A bus shuttle program for families of incarcerated men is helping hundreds of California children spend time with their dads on Father's Day weekend. Mana Rabiee reports.

Six-year-old Christian knows what to give his dad on Father's Day. SOUNDBITE: SIX-YEAR-OLD CHRISTIAN GONZALES SAYING: "I always want to buy him chips because its Father's Day." But mom Angelica Perez knows time spent with his father doesn't come easy. SOUNDBITE: MOTHER ANGELICA PEREZ SAYING: "He says 'Oh well, I want to take dad to go out, or I want to take dad to the beach I want to this', and I have to say we cant." That's because dad Ramon Perez is serving time in the Salinas Valley State prison, in maximum security. SOUNDBITE: MOTHER ANGELICA PEREZ SAYING: "It gets pretty hard to explain to him that we cannot have those moments...its not easy to explain to him that we cant celebrate fathers day like we celebrate with my dad and just because of where he is at." But the 'Get on the Bus' program is helping dozens of families spend time with their dads on Father's Day. It brings families to see incarcerated loved ones. Families that otherwise can't meet because of the distance. SOUNDBITE: DARREN CHAMBERLAIN, PRISON PIO, SAYING: "It gives that sense of hope to not only the inmates but also for the family to keep that family bond." SOUNDBITE: MOTHER ANGELICA PEREZ SAYING: "When we get to see him, when he get that first hug and kiss its like I'm here with you. I can talk to you about my week. I almost forget that we are in here." Nearly 300 kids were able to meet with their dads this Father's Day weekend at the prison. And Christian got to buy his dad that that perfect gift after all...
