Michael Schumacher, the former Formula One motor racing champion, is out of a coma. His spokeswoman made the announcement on Monday. Schumacher had been in a medically-induced coma at a French hospital since December. That's when he sustained severe head injuries in a skiing accident. He's reportedly left that medical facility and was admitted Monday to a hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, near his home. Doctors in France had started to lower Schumacher's sedation levels in late January, to wake him up from the artificial coma. The German seven-times world champion started showing signs of consciousness in April. The Swiss hospital where he's now receiving treatment won't say which medical unit he's been admitted to, citing medical secrecy and family privacy. Schumacher's family released a brief statement on Monday thanking his medical teams and well-wishers. They asked for privacy and said the rest of Schumacher's rehabilitation will take place out of the public spotlight.
